A score by legendary Leonard Bernstein is but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Candide and its theatrical offerings. With a book from Hugh Wheeler and lyrical contributions from the incomparable Stephen Sondheim, Candide is a masterpiece for the ages. In one lightning-paced act, Candide — the bastard cousin of Baron Thunder-Ten-Tonck — is expelled from home, dragged into the Bulgarian army, brought before the Spanish Inquisition, swindled out of a fortune, shipwrecked on a desert isle and separated time and again from his true love, Cunegonde.

She, too, bears a barrage of misfortunes, including — but not limited to — sale into prostitution, forced marriage to an exorbitantly wealthy man and slavery. Through it all, however, they try to remember the lessons of their dear master, Dr. Pangloss: "Everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds. With riotous wit, Candide is a wondrous piece for nearly any company. Scenically it can be as grand or as simple as the designer sees fit and, likewise, requires a cast of only moderate size that can be easily expanded to accommodate the grandest of ensembles.

Candide is the ideal blend of sophisticated operetta and wacky Python-esque comedy, and will surely thrill a wide range of theatergoers. Concert Selections are original Broadway orchestrations and exciting new symphonic arrangements of select songs for use in concert performances.

Available on iOS and Android.M ark Ravenhill has taken Voltaire's laconically witty satire on 18th-century philosophy and turned it into a savage assault on modern myopic optimism and a meditation on the nature of narrative.

The result is an extraordinary piece, one that bulges with bright ideas, but tries to cram too much into a minute evening and lacks the hurtling concision of its source. Ravenhill seeks to juggle several different realities. He starts with a play-within-a-play pastiche of 18th-century theatre, summarising Voltaire's original story. We then shift abruptly to modern times and a family murder staged in protest at our denial of ecological catastrophe. This, in turn, leads to an exploration of how the modern movie industry would handle such a story, a vision of Voltaire's Eldorado and a climactic attack on contemporary Panglossian optimism.

Each section of Ravenhill's play is vibrant in itself, but I found myself overwhelmed by the profusion of ideas.

I suspect the basic intention is to shock us into an awareness of how we are sleepwalking into disaster, but we get diverted by the contest between determinism and free will, and Ravenhill's fascination with the possibilities of dramatic form. Still, too much is better than too little, and Lyndsey Turner's production and Soutra Gilmour's design bravely match Ravenhill's kaleidoscopic restlessness; the moment in which Candide escapes the mind-numbingly cheerful Eldorado on a sheep's back is typically inventive.

A large cast moves between styles and periods with great elan, and there is fine work from Matthew Needham as the Voltairean Candide, Sarah Ridgeway as a suicidal protester, Katy Stephens as a mother who seeks validation through suffering, and Susan Engel as a Cunegonde who has miraculously defied the centuries. It may not be the best of all possible plays, but at least Ravenhill has the wit to question, like Stephen Emmott's book and dramatised lecture, Ten Billionour own somnambulistic optimism about the planet's future.

One, as with Hal Prince's New York revival, is to treat it as a circus-like extravaganza. The other way, as in John Caird's excellent National Theatre versionis to allow the songs to spring out of a Voltaireian philosophical debate.

Matthew White's new production opts for the former and, even if the fun flags towards the end, it has a jaunty ebullience. Physically, it is astonishingly similar to the Prince production. Designer Paul Farnsworth has transformed the Menier into a rectangular arena, with the action frequently erupting on the surrounding walkways. The adventures of the unaffectedly simple Candide and his beloved Cunegonde are also presented in restless, comic-strip style.

A Teutonic baroness is symbolised by a towering puppet, an auto-da-fe becomes a jokey affair with cardinal's hats placed on audience heads, and the El Dorado sheep resemble fleecy hold-alls. This is all very inventive, but tends to obscure the fact that Voltaire's story raises seriously interesting questions.

How do you reconcile free will and determinism? And how, if this is the best of all possible worlds, do you explain human cruelty and natural disasters? I can't say these issues come to the fore in White's production. Some of the genuinely funny lines in Hugh Wheeler's book are glossed — you might say Panglossed — over.

But it is nevertheless a joy to hear Bernstein's eclectic score, which embraces everything from European operetta to Latin American dance rhythms, rendered with such vigour by a nine-piece band.

And the two lead actors are outstanding. The test for any Cunegonde is inevitably the big coloratura number, Glitter and Be Gayand it is one that Scarlett Strallen passes with banners flying: she wittily turns the high notes into a mark of Cunegonde's rapacity as she avidly seizes on jewels, tiaras and even shards of an overhanging chandelier. Fra Fee, of Northern Irish origin, also brings to Candide a fresh face, a strong voice and the right reckless faith in the world's goodness.

Jackie Clune as the anally challenged Old Lady and James Dreyfus as the fatally optimistic Pangloss lend good support, and the whole show goes with a great swing. Is it churlish to ask if it we could come out humming Voltaire's ideas as well as Bernstein's vivacious tunes? Tell us about it using gdnreview. Topics Musicals. Theatre reviews.
