Deliveroo has also launched a fund to support riders who might have to take time off work if they are diagnosed with coronavirus and said it will pay out the equivalent of statutory sick pay for up to 14 days. Since its riders are self-employed they would not normally have been entitled to sick pay. Demand for food delivery packages has increased in parts of China affected by a lockdown as a result of the outbreak of the respiratory disease, as restaurants close, people avoid public gatherings and self-isolate.
Customers have raised concerns on social media about receiving packages if they are self-isolating, while delivery drivers fear they could come into contact with the virus during drop offs. In the US, food delivery firms including Postmates have been testing similar no-contact delivery options.
In China, delivery firm Meituan has been checking the temperature of riders and asking them to display this when they make drop offs. In the UK, the government has been discussing setting up hotlines for elderly people to receive food packages if they are self-isolating. Uber Eats, meanwhile, said it had been reminding customers they can ask for food to be dropped off outside by leaving a special request in its app while ordering.
